If you’ve ever been confused by small scale vs. large scale in GIS, you’re not alone. This was one of those concepts that took me a while to fully grasp. At first, it seemed counterintuitive—why does a small-scale map show a large area while a large-scale map focuses on a small area?

The breakthrough for me was realizing that extent is the inverse of size
